Show Me A Young Conservative And He Will Have No Heart; Show Me An Old Liberal And He Will Have No Brain

April 12th, 2014 by Michael Tabor

That’s what they say and as much as I hate to admit to the truth of this old adage, the older I get, the more this truism resonates. I wrote a blog not too long ago about liberalswhat a drag it is getting old and certainly one of the misfortunes of my/our generation aging is that we really did not yet achieve our true goal of a true liberal United states come to fruition. Not Yet, anyway !!!

Lyndon B. Johnson (as flawed of a president as he was) stated that the highest duty of government was to ensure equality and help people caught in “the tentacles of circumstance.” That’s in a nutshell what a liberal is – an individual who is compassionate and caring. There will always be people that for whatever reason need help and support and we as an evolved nation have an obligation to help those who can’t help themselves.

On the flip side, there comes a time when we have to pass the baton to the next generation. As we grow older, and the more we become aware of our mortality and our limited time on this earth, our personal survival and the survival of our loved ones seems more important than some abstract concept such as equality, fairness and the ultimate – “To understand all, is to forgive all.”

So WhaDaYaThink ? What do you think ? I think it’s all very simple: If you’re old and comfortable, you want things to stay the same and are prodigiously fearful of any type of change. A vigorous young person has his or her whole life to make a stance and perhaps change the world !!!

I hope I will always be open – minded and accept the fact that change is inevitable. I do however understand and have no problem whatsoever about people being utterly terrified by the inexorable march of time and change from the status quo. However, if the truth is the truth, ACCEPT and embrace reality. Peace, Love, and understanding to all !!! To understand the man who robbed my wife is no easy task.

Corporations – Not The Government, Are What’s Boss!!!

January 12th, 2014 by Michael Tabor

How interesting, mind – boggling, and quite frankly bizarre is the FACT that most people concern themselves with politicscorporate1corporate2corpoate3 and which political party one is affiliated with rather than really getting down to the very root of who (or what) is really in charge of matters and ultimately who is in fact controlling the world. Secondly, what I find fascinating is that though corporations are of course comprised of people, the reality is that Microsoft, Apple, IBM, and Google don’t really exist in the truest sense of the word.

When I was in college, I was lectured to by a very astute professor who stated that the most powerful corporations run itself and noboby is irreplaceable; yes, certainly you need personnel and brilliant people, but the aforementioned corporate entities have prodigiously deep pockets and can certainly attract the best and the brightest.
Any average person can figure this out if you just sit and think about it: Corporations employ lobbies, lobbies in turn exert their profound influence on politicians and lawmakers, and then the politicians ultimately con you into voting for him or her. Along this road and path there are a lot of favors and backroom deals that will of course be reciprocated.
So WhaDaYaThink ? What do you think ? Incidentally, corporations care about only two things which is 1. to first survive and then 2. grow as big as it can possibly get at all costs and without concern or care for you or the planet (extracting fossil fuels, dumping toxic wastes into our waters, fracking, etc.) & the fuel which turns the corporation into a finely – tuned, well – oiled machine is – MONEY and lots of it. $$$ doesn’t talk, it screams.

What Do We Do With Syria?

September 5th, 2013 by Michael Tabor

syriaI think we, the United States is in a no – win situation. To start, the obvious is that the use of chemical weapons and nerve gas by the Assad regime against its own citizens is absolutely reprehensible and I’m certain that in a perfect world those who were responsible would be identified, targeted, and ultimately eliminated from the face of the earth. However obviously this is something that is neither tenable nor remotely possible and the only option our country has in terms of retribution is strategic military strikes. BUT, just think , not only is this not an effective viable solution i.e. just more civilian deaths and massive infrastructure destruction, not to mention the rabbit hole with which this country, the United States, would have to contend e.g. “boots on the ground”,  the tenuous geopolitical relationships we have with nations such as Russia and Iran (who support the Assad government), the Palestinians who are split … Israel and a plethora of other catastrophic scenarios, etc. Furthermore, what is the end game ?

The Assad regime (The notorious Ba’ath Party) is wicked beyond belief but I think we can all agree that the Syrian rebel fighters are certainly not our friends. This civil war has been going on for more than 2 years now (Arab Spring) and more than 100,000 people have died, just about half of whom are civilians.   So, WhadaweThink ? What do you think? The Middle East is war – torn and a mess; whether we strike or do nothing will invariably have repercussions.  We can’t turn a blind eye to a nation that uses chemical weapons but I feel there is nothing we can do but lament the ineffable sadness of it all.

This Mayoral Race is Now a Freak Show

August 12th, 2013 by Michael Tabor

New York politics has always been an ugly business but this is now becoming a circus.  Anthony Weiner unbelievably called his rep. opponent, George McDonald – “grandpa” of all places at an AARP (American Association of Retired Persons) forum. Obviously, Weiner’s comment was outrageously inappropriate and indefensible; however all of his opponents won’t let the “sexting” scandal go.

We all know what Anthony Weiner did and he’s not dropping out of the race, so the candidates ought to just move on and start talking about real and important issues. Here’s the video of the exchange and as you can see it looks like they’re actually going to get into fisticuffs –  two grown men behaving like children.

Would You Vote For “Carlos Danger” ?

July 24th, 2013 by Michael Tabor

postweinI am shocked that there are people out there who are still willing to give Anthony Weiner another chance. Now, for clarification purposes, the most recent revelation is that his creepy “sexting” did cease (as far as we know) after he announced his decision to run for mayor of New York City, however the aberrant behavior continued on for about another year after he resigned from congress in 2011.

In my opinion, even if he was a single man, the erect penis photos and the “tweets” were and are monumentally inappropriate and laughably lame (Carlos Danger ??? ) The fact that he’s a married man whose wife had just given birth to a boy just exacerbates the perception of his behavior.

Even if you’re super liberal and you find his antics just a matter of innocuous flirtation (I find it unfathomable that a person would really think this way, but…), his actions nevertheless outraged the public, his constituency, and his colleagues enough to ask and demand that he resign in the first place, so why would he continue to do it ??? He’s clearly demonstrated that he’s suffering from some sort of pathology and needs treatment. Furthermore, it’s obvious that he’s a reckless man (Carlos Danger)and not fit for representing the public and making important decisions on our behalf.

So WhaDaYaThink ? What do you think ?Weiner supporters may suggest that, not unlike the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky affair, this is a personal matter between Anthony Weiner and his wife, Huma Abedin and has nothing to do with being mayor and public policy.  Fair enough, vote for him, I think he’s creepy.

Pat Robertson Blames Ugly Women for Marital Problems

March 24th, 2013 by Michael Tabor
Pat Robertson, host of the 700 Club (Christian news and TV show)  a  staunch republican who unsuccessfully campaigned to run for president in 1988, and incidentally, the former good friend and spiritual advisor and consultant to the late Ronald Reagan recently stated that unattractive women are the cause for marital problems and the high rate of divorce in this country.  Here is a quote from Pat delivered on his show the other day:
A woman came to a preacher that I know, and she was awful looking. I mean, her hair was all torn up and she was overweight and looked terrible, clothes bad and everything. And she said, ‘Oh, Reverend, what can I do? My husband has started to drink.’ And the preacher looked at her and said, ‘Madam, if I was married to you I’d start to drink too.’ We need to cultivate romance, darling! … You always have to keep that spark of love alive. It just isn’t something to just lie there, ‘Well, I’m married to him so he’s got to take me slatternly looking.’ You’ve got to fix yourself up, look pretty

.

Here is a laundry list of some other gems Robertson has spewed over the years:

1. The conservative Christian thinks that “nuking” the U.S. State Department is a good idea; these are Pat’s words ” If we could just manage to get a nuclear device into the “Foggy Bottom” (State Department) it would be good for the country.”
2. Mr. Robertson maintains that he literally communicates with the Christian God and even went on to say that  God whispered into his ear and stated to him in no uncertain terms that the U.S deserved to be attacked on 9/11 because the Lord is upset  with our handling of feminists, homosexuals, pagans, abortionists, and the ACLU .
3. Robertson believes that thirty to forty thousand left-wing professors in the United States are racists, murderers, sexual deviants, and supporters of Al-Qaeda.
4. The evangelist has described feminists as a socialist, anti – family movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and ultimately become lesbians.
5. Robertson has said many egregiously offensive things but stating that Haitians were to blame, (God told Robertson that Haiti made a pact with the devil …. During the 1791 slave rebellion) for the 2010 earthquake in which 220, 000 of its citizens were killed ranks right up there with his 9/11 remarks.

So WhaDaYaThhink, What do you think ? I’m not sure if anyone takes this madman seriously anymore but he still garners some attention – at least from the religious zealots; and nobody can deny the fact that he was a major player before and during the Reagan administration.

Politicians On Both Sides of The Aisle Are So Pompous!

February 15th, 2013 by Michael Tabor
I blogged a little something the other day about the illuminating documentary I saw – ‘Casino Jack and The United States of Money’ which really, sadly, shed light on how corrupt and flawed our system of government really is; money doesn’t talk, it SCREAMS !!! Many politicians, I won’t say most, but more politicians than we would like to comfortably admit, can easily be bought off (again stream this film off of Netflix – please !!!) I am certain that I am going to be researching and writing a whole lot more about our entrusted public officials and the slime ball lobbyists who bribe them; I just want to leave you with something that the great documentarian, Alex Gibney (love this guy) stated on the commentary of ‘Casino JackMoney”  I actually went back and wrote down what he said about “The big bad sleazy – Tom Delay”

Here it is:  “Look at Tom Delay walking with all that swagger and confidence (remember how Dubya strutted?) and knowing that he’s the man with all that power .. walking down the halls of the hill surrounded by his ass-kissing aides … it’s like Delay thinks he’s Achilles and his Myrmidons walking towards the walls of Troy ready to do battle and out comes his BIG weapon – the cell phone.”  I laughed so hard…hahahhahah, it’s so true !!! These guys are just pathetic scum.

So WhaDaYaThinK ? What do you think ? After seeing Alex Gibney’s documentary, I must confess that I have become unfortunately a less naïve and more cynical person in terms of how and why certain laws are passed. Jimmy Stewart’s ‘Mr. Smith Goes To Washington”… if life were only a movie authored by the pollyanna and idealistic – Frank Capra …

Despicable and Evil, yet Pious

February 13th, 2013 by Michael Tabor

Last night I got a chance to watch the documentary ‘Casino Jack and the United States of Money’ which was about the life of the criminal, former Lobbyist – Jack Abramoff and the massive GOP corruption scandal in which he was involved during the W. Bush Administration. This film is as good as it gets in terms of documentaries go – 4 star, 5 star… whatever, Alex Gibney, the director (who also made the documentary about Enron) nailed this and I can’t recommend this highly enough –  this is a Must – see. I’m not going to do a movie review (future blog), however I just want to touch on something that struck me last night: how is it possible for a wicked and evil person to be pious, and I mean religious beyond the average i.e. born – again Christian or Orthodox Jew. It doesn’t make sense…it seems incongruous.
If you see the film and listen to the commentary (I recommend it), Alex Gibney raised the point as well – look: Jack Abramoff –Orthodox Jew (comically converted after seeing ‘Fiddler On The Roof), Ralph Reed – born again Christian, Tom Delay, Michael Scanlon, Bob Ney, and the rest of the thugs are all religious zealots. Well, I couldn’t agree more with Mr. Gibney when he theorized that very often religious zealotry and devoted godliness, is in a sense a way of easing one’s conscience; what I’m doing can’t be wrong, God is on my side. I’m the good guy and though bribing people for tens of millions of dollars may seem wrong at face value, it’s a means to an end. They all have this incredible arrogance as though to think ” I’m SPECIAL, I’m not mediocre, I’m allowed to do these things because I’m one of the chosen ones.
I won’t elaborate too much on this and I certainly believe that most ordinary Christians and Jews are good people, WhaDaYaThink ?  how can you rationalize or compartmentalize  such immoral action and with such passion and ambition – not all of these people are pathologically sociopathic.
What do you think ?

The Benghazi Incident – Confused? You’re Not Alone

January 25th, 2013 by Michael Tabor
To start, sadly, 4 Americans are dead:

Christopher Stevens – U.S. Ambassador to Libya

Sean Smith – U.S. Foreign Service Information Management Officer

Glen Doherty – former Navy Seal and staunch opponent of Christian Proselytizers/bullies trying to convert Muslims to Christianity and a member of MRFF (Military Religious Freedom Foundation)

Tyrone Snowden – Navy Seal and Member of State Department Diplomatic Security

These human beings died when a U.S. Consulate was attacked at Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012 – these are the facts and the easy part in terms of understanding what happened, the rest is just spin and ugly politics; especially, as usual being hurled from the right.

This is an editorial and perhaps I’m biased, but I can’t possibly see how this tragedy could have been averted. Were there threats and violence beforehand near Benghazi ? Of course, but allow me to pose, how many consulates or diplomatic missions are the United States involved in, umm, well how many countries are there ? Benghazi was certainly on the Obama administration’s radar, but it happened, and there is nothing we can or could have done (without having been giving specific intelligence as to where and when) about it.
Some more ugly politics, this time on the left  –  how Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Susan Rice handled the tragedy afterwards  – no they ought to have stated the truth about prior intelligence indicating a strong possibility of a strike, and no Obama and Rice should have immediately declared TERRORIST ATTACK and not played footsy; but folks this is a very delicate situation in which we’re enmeshed. We just killed Muammar Gaddafi and we’re in the process of establishing diplomatic relations with a nation that was for more than 40 years ruled by the iron fist of this vicious dictatorship and under extreme Islamist sentiment.
So WhaDaYaThink? What do you think? I thought the GOP was especially vicious in terms of the way they attacked Hillary Clinton yesterday – my goodness she was so ill, she almost died. However, Mrs. Clinton handled herself well and I guess I would have been surprised and a little disappointed if the republicans actually unprecedentedly showed a little compassion.

Okay – It’s a Start

January 15th, 2013 by Michael Tabor

Legislating a ban on assault weapons is indeed going to be a tall order, so yes I am pleased with today’s news calling for strict background checks. If you “try and lie”, you go to jail – that makes sense. I know that a criminal will just go on the black market, buy it on the street, or steal his mother’s guns, but we can’t just “do nothing.” The status quo is just not acceptable – this is indeed a step in the right direction toward curbing gun violence, even if only one life is saved.  New York approved the bill by 43 to 18; this makes NY the first state to act in response to the Newtown massacre but what I don’t get is that there were actually 18 nays – what sane, logical human being is not interested in keeping firearms out of the hands of the mentally ill or people with a criminal history.

I suspect that the naysayers don’t like the piece of legislation which states that people can no longer purchase semi – automatic pistols and rifles with detachable magazines – you know, the weaponry used in the military. However, the folks who already own these guns are still allowed to keep them, they just have to now register the weapon with the state. Like I said – baby steps; am I completely happy with this new legislation?  – No, for example I wish the law compelled the state to force the individuals to not only register the assault weapon, but also ensure that each and every gun – owner undergo a quick 1 hour psychological evaluation. The message should be clear: we will no longer tolerate the ownership of assault weapons by people who are mentally unfit to carry such a weapon.

The next baby steps are to now promote loudly and clearly the aforementioned message, so that the other 49 states in the nation follow suit. If this in fact happens, I can guarantee that we will curb gun violence. Okay, everyone knows my position and I’ve certainly spilled enough ink over gun control, so no now it’s your turn – WhaDaYaThink ? What do you think? Do you like the new laws New York has just passed? I’m proud to say that I reside in a state that acted first
