Marathon Runner Dies at the Age of 47

March 18th, 2013 by Michael Tabor

26 miles and 385 yards – that’s insanity!!! People point their finger at me and say that I’m a fan of a brutal sport (MMA –Mixed Martial Arts) but not a single person has ever died in the UFC octagon; and though I don’t have the exact statistics, invariably every year or so, one hears that a person has died of a heart attack running the outrageously long race.

Why does the race have to be that long ? And, who are the morons who elect to participate in such a deleterious sporting event? It’s a medical fact that engaging in any cardiovascular activity for more than an hour provides no further benefits to one’s health and in fact pushing oneself beyond 40 minutes to an hour without pause is simply put – dangerous. I find it quite interesting to note that these professional marathon runners do not look in any way shape or form  – healthy; in fact they look sickly and in need of a good highly – caloric meal.

I do respect the gutsy toughness of the runners, but can’t they cut it down to 13 miles, instead of 26 ??? Wouldn’t that make sense?

So, WhaDaYaThink ? What do you think ?

Isn’t it About Time That We Legalize Marijuana???

March 13th, 2013 by Michael Tabor
My body chemistry doesn’t react favorably to the ingestion of weed, I get paranoid, so I don’t smoke it; however marijuana is in fact less dangerous than most drugs including the legal ones – tobacco and alcohol. I don’t like it but that’s me, others however love it and don’t abuse the substance … so let’s decriminalize, regulate and tax the stuff already. For most users, marijuana is no less of an issue than having a glass of wine with dinner; one would be shocked to learn the number of fashionable, cultured, and very high – functioning high society folks who enjoy a little innocuous weed now and then.

There is not a whole lot of downside (pot has been labeled a gateway drug to more dangerous ones – which is certainly debatable) and a plethora of upside. The first and most obvious benefit is the economics of  it all: 1. This country will save around 7.7 billion $$ on eliminating the enforcement of  the illegal drug status 2. The other awesome benefit if mary jane is regulated, decriminalized, etc. we can tax the good (lol – pot – a good) and reap in almost 3 billion dollars.

The other positive aspect of  legalizing pot is the fact that there will now be regulatory control, which means the consumer will get exactly what he or she is paying for, hence a safer and better product. Furthermore, if in fact marijuana is decriminalized the price will be slashed dramatically and the profits will be garnered by law – abiding merchants. Marijuana also has medicinal properties and cancer patients have maintained that their quality of life has increased…. I can go on further with the pros and cons of decriminalization (and there are many more, which I certainly invite the readers to contribute) but I think you get my point.

So WhaDaYaThink ? What do you think ? One other factoid is that pot is a uniquely different drug in terms of – you either like it or you don’t; as I stated in my first paragraph I don’t like the way it makes me feel so I don’t smoke it – period. So, let’s make marijuana legal already, this may in fact mend (or @ least help) our crippled current economy.

Why Reject Sanctions For Polar Bears?

March 11th, 2013 by Magdalena Tabor

I’m sorry I didn’t get to write about this sooner because time is always of the utmost importance on actions that have already been too long delayed. But on Thursday, the US sought to protect the killing and distribution of Polar Bear parts at a world conference but was voted down by Canada, Norway and Greenland. This is a huge blow for those who advocate this magnificent species.
The Unites States argues that shrinking Arctic ice habitat due to climate change, places the Polar Bear at risk for extinction and demands for its protection were argued against. Canada, which holds the largest poplulation of Polar Bears, claims that there is no indication of the bears’ marked decline and is not threatened.
Prices for Polar Bear pelts have increased dramatically and are traded among 70 countries with every indication of its continued escalation. So it all comes down to money. This barbaric practice has to stop! Restrictions on its trade must be met head on. I won’t go into the particulars but did want to make quick mention of it. Please be so interested as to read the editorial on cnn.com and then contact your congressman.
We need to be the spokesmen for those that cannot speak for themselves.

Hey Milton Friedman, It Ought to Be Gushing Down Economics, Not Trickle Down!!!

March 5th, 2013 by Michael Tabor

It was hard to argue against Milton Friedman when times were good, but now that the middle class is suffering (not to mention the poor but the poor always were and always will be poor & miserable), many people are starting to take another look at trickle-down economics.

Man is greedy and will always look out for his or her own interest before anyone else’s; Milton Friedman understood this very human trait only too well and developed a theory around it which won him a Nobel Prize for economics. “Greed is good…” Gordon Gekko, the fictional inside trader tycoon from the 1987 film ‘Wall Street’ said, echoing Friedman’s philosophy and it is in fact the driving force of a free market system – greed & competition. I agree with 90% of trickledown, free markets, and competition – oh yes, and even that ugly human thing – greed, which we can use for the benefit of society as a whole. Scenario: I do well, I create jobs, the people I hire do well and they create jobs, ad infinitum and then trickle down (I mean gushing down). This makes sense and it truly works, however not always.
I love the free market system and it works like magic when you are selling lampshades, cars, computers, etc. The problem exists down on Wall street; the successful traders or “Masters of the Universe” are just hoarding, buying yachts, and not creating jobs – not to mention derivatives, insider trading and cheating. Rather than Friedman’s theory, I’ve always liked John Maynard Keynes more.  I agree with the late Mr. Friedman in terms of free enterprise; however you MUST have some form of regulation, which is why I and President Obama put more stock into Keynesian economics.

Trickledown that ought to be gushing down if it were executed properly doesn’t always work in real life. When something catastrophic happens, such as the real estate burst, or the dot.com bubble, etc., the government needs to pump money into certain markets and bail out i.e. banks so we can get the well – oiled and finely tuned economic free market system going again – Keynesian economics. Yes, let the private sector do it’s magic but when there’s a recession, we NEED help from the government, a stimulus plan, which is exactly what this administration is doing as well as trying to trim the deficit.

It’s not only Wall Street that caused this mess e.g. I can get into supply and demand, markdowns, surplus, lack of consumer spending, economic cycles, high unemployment, the miserable poor, and a plethora of other economic variables but I just wanted to here in this blog – drive home the point that government spending is not a bad thing and point out that Mr. Friedman’s theory is almost perfect, but not quite.
So, WhaDaYaThink ? What do you Think? What are your thoughts on Keynesian economics or do you still hold on to the tenets of Milton Friedman?

What is All The Hoopla About Lindsay Lohan ?

February 28th, 2013 by Michael Tabor

I don’t think there is a day that goes by in which I don’t hear some thing or some incident concerning Lindsay Lohan – and my question is what is all the commotion and excitement about. I still don’t know a whole lot about Ms. Lohan, other than the fact that she was a child star- continues to act, model and sing and parties; she likes to drink and has had a couple of DUIs (what young person doesn’t party a little ?) Early in her career (she got into show business when she was 3), the press loved her and she got a lot of praise, now she’s the red – headed step child of show business and now everything is all negative. I’m sure she is a spoiled, insolent 20 – something but the media are all over her – give her a break !!!

The Germans have a wonderful word for all this tabloid media frenzy, it’s called schadenfreude – the malicious delight and satisfaction in seeing another human being suffer. Another truism is that people in general don’t like other folks who are too successful, especially if one seems ungrateful for their incredible good fortune. I started reading Wikipedia before writing this and I got bored after the first two paragraphs – there’s nothing special or outrageous about this Lindsay Lohan. So, again why do the media pick out a certain celebrity and then just incessantly grind away at him or her ?
So, WhadaYaThink ? What do you think ? Oprah, Lady GaGa, Alec Baldwin & Madonna (were).. the list is endless; but what is it about Lindsay Lohan ?

Numbers don’t Lie

February 20th, 2013 by Michael Tabor
I knew we led the industrialized world in terms of gun deaths and injuries but quite frankly I was shocked to find out how MANY people are killed or maimed from guns – deliberate or accidental:
Believe it or not, this country, U.S.A., has more guns than the actual # of people living in this country. Approx. 310 million firearms versus 305 million residents. (btw, that’s not including the military)
Per criminology census in 2010:

. 358 murders with a rifle
. 6,009 murders with a handgun
. 1,939 unreported gun deaths (I don’t really get this one.. if  it wasn’t reported, how do they know ??? but anyway, this is an official census.
. 66.9% of all homicides in U.S. were perpetrated with a gun.

Now non-fatal injuries in 2010:
52,447 deliberate gun related injuries

23,237 accidental gun related injuries

Suicides with a gun in 2010
19,392

Total for 2010:  27,698 gun related deaths
75,684 gun related injuries
So that’s more causalities in this country in one year than all the casualties we suffered in 10 years in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Oh yeah, we don’t have a problem with guns in this country – it’s only worse than 2 war zones. So WhaDaYaThink ? What do you think ?

The Magazines And Bullet Capacity Limits

February 19th, 2013 by Michael Tabor
Since the Newtown Massacre, I have been spilling a lot of ink on gun control ; this is of course, a prodigiously important issue and we have an epidemic on our hands.  I have been clamoring for a nation – wide ban on all automatic and semi – automatic weapons but the reality is, that’s probably not going to happen. We live in a democracy, which means that nobody can get exactly what one wants all the time; democracy equals deliberation and compromise. So, here we go…this makes sense.

Christopher Murphy, the Senator from Connecticut has been pondering and asking himself this one question: Why did the gunman, Adam Lanza, after killing 20 children, suddenly stop shooting, put down the semi – automatic rifle and finally end his miserable existence with a pistol ? The Senator vehemently believes that Lanza put down the rifle because the magazine was empty; if he wanted to continue with the killing, he would have had to change magazines, and for amateurs, this sometimes can be a little tricky or perhaps take a minute to reload. So, knowing this, couldn’t the answer for curbing (not eliminating completely – that’s impossible) gun violence be in banning the legal manufacturing and purchasing of  magazines with a capacity of more than 6 bullets ??? I think this is the answer; law – abiding citizens can keep their semi – automatic weapons but can’t buy cartridges that hold more than 6 rounds.
Senator Christopher Murphy went on to say “I believe, and many of the parents there believe, that if Lanza had to switch cartridges 9 times versus 2 times there would likely still be little boys and girls alive in Newtown today.” This is a poignantly profound and powerful statement and I happen to concur with the Senator.

So WhaDaYaThink ? What do you think ? I have been thinking long and hard about this and I think this is a reasonable and realistic compromise. Let’s not allow another Newtown happen again.

Despicable and Evil, yet Pious

February 13th, 2013 by Michael Tabor

Last night I got a chance to watch the documentary ‘Casino Jack and the United States of Money’ which was about the life of the criminal, former Lobbyist – Jack Abramoff and the massive GOP corruption scandal in which he was involved during the W. Bush Administration. This film is as good as it gets in terms of documentaries go – 4 star, 5 star… whatever, Alex Gibney, the director (who also made the documentary about Enron) nailed this and I can’t recommend this highly enough -  this is a Must – see. I’m not going to do a movie review (future blog), however I just want to touch on something that struck me last night: how is it possible for a wicked and evil person to be pious, and I mean religious beyond the average i.e. born – again Christian or Orthodox Jew. It doesn’t make sense…it seems incongruous.
If you see the film and listen to the commentary (I recommend it), Alex Gibney raised the point as well – look: Jack Abramoff –Orthodox Jew (comically converted after seeing ‘Fiddler On The Roof), Ralph Reed – born again Christian, Tom Delay, Michael Scanlon, Bob Ney, and the rest of the thugs are all religious zealots. Well, I couldn’t agree more with Mr. Gibney when he theorized that very often religious zealotry and devoted godliness, is in a sense a way of easing one’s conscience; what I’m doing can’t be wrong, God is on my side. I’m the good guy and though bribing people for tens of millions of dollars may seem wrong at face value, it’s a means to an end. They all have this incredible arrogance as though to think ” I’m SPECIAL, I’m not mediocre, I’m allowed to do these things because I’m one of the chosen ones.
I won’t elaborate too much on this and I certainly believe that most ordinary Christians and Jews are good people, WhaDaYaThink ?  how can you rationalize or compartmentalize  such immoral action and with such passion and ambition – not all of these people are pathologically sociopathic.
What do you think ?

Chris Dorner is Still on The Lam; The Case is Likely to Galvanize a Reexamination of The L.A.P.D.’s Notorious History of Racism And Corruption

February 10th, 2013 by Michael Tabor
The hulky yet deceptively pleasant – looking triple – homicide suspect and former LAPD officer, Christopher Dorner, is still on the lam. The task force, police from L.A. , Riverside, and Irvine, SWAT teams as well as the F.B.I. , and other agencies are hoping the well – trained survivor won’t escape to Mexico. The disgruntled Dorner posted a rambling and bizarre manifesto on Facebook expressing his grievances surrounding his firing in 2008, opinions of social issues (from gay marriage to a ban on assault weapons,  celebrity heroes, and frighteningly his plans to kill his former colleagues and their families. Incidentally, one of Dorner’s heroes was Charlie Sheen, who to Sheen’s credit I suppose, has encouraged Dorner to reach out and call him so they can work things out.

The official reason for Dorner’s firing was that he lied about an alleged incident – a fabricated story in which a fellow officer abused a homeless individual. The aforementioned was considered to be the last straw in a long string of poor, inappropriate, and unprofessional police conduct. One of reasons Dorner claims he was fired for was because the L.A.P.D. is rife with racism, targeting not only himself who is black but also the rampant racial profiling against which he vehemently spoke out.  Chief Charlie Beck made a statement that the L.A.P.D. will reopen the case regarding all the reasons he was fired and prove that the department is not racist and Dorner’s allegations are completely false.  We all know that the L.A.P.D. has a history of corruption and race issues; one need only go back to the Rodney King incident back in 1992 – we shall soon find out whether or not there are skeletons lurking around.

So WhaDaYaThink ? What do you think ? It’s been 4 days since Dorner has been a fugitive and I can’t believe that given the prodigious task force out there not to mention the hound dogs … where can he be ???

Jaw – Dropping Violent Knockout On TUF

February 7th, 2013 by Michael Tabor
Wow !!! Uriah Hall dropped Adam Cella with the most devastating spinning back kick I’ve ever seen in my life. Dana White, the president of UFC, said Cella was out for 4 minutes; an incredibly frightening four minutes for obviously Cella, Hall, other MMA fighters, the loyal fans, Dana white, and the UFC.

I am a fan of the sport and I used to practice it years ago (I’ve blogged about this… I suffered a detached retina and almost lost my sight). Perhaps surprising to many not familiar with MMA, the fighters are anything but violent thugs jacked up on off – the – chart –levels of testosterone; indeed they are respectful, regular guys just doing a job in a sport in which the most athletic, toughest, and talented men (now women too) fight each other in a cage for, when compared to other sports, not a whole lot of  $$ (another blog).

What made this knockout stand out from other violent K.O.s, was the fact that it was a spinning back kick, which is somewhat unorthodox (nobody saw it coming) and essentially Hall’s whole mass was used in addition to the vicious force and velocity of the blow – “whip – like”. Another surprise, is though Cella was out for 4 whole minutes, he suffered no serious injuries and stated that he can’t wait to get back into the octagon.
What scares me is that the fighters in the sport, not unlike football, are just getting bigger, faster, and stronger and unbelievably enough, there have been no fatalities in the UFC, but I think it’s just a matter of time – then what ???

So WhaDaYaThink? What do you think ? Here’s a clip of the knockout…
