Numbers don’t Lie

February 20th, 2013 by Michael Tabor
I knew we led the industrialized world in terms of gun deaths and injuries but quite frankly I was shocked to find out how MANY people are killed or maimed from guns – deliberate or accidental:
Believe it or not, this country, U.S.A., has more guns than the actual # of people living in this country. Approx. 310 million firearms versus 305 million residents. (btw, that’s not including the military)
Per criminology census in 2010:

. 358 murders with a rifle
. 6,009 murders with a handgun
. 1,939 unreported gun deaths (I don’t really get this one.. if  it wasn’t reported, how do they know ??? but anyway, this is an official census.
. 66.9% of all homicides in U.S. were perpetrated with a gun.

Now non-fatal injuries in 2010:
52,447 deliberate gun related injuries

23,237 accidental gun related injuries

Suicides with a gun in 2010
19,392

Total for 2010:  27,698 gun related deaths
75,684 gun related injuries
So that’s more causalities in this country in one year than all the casualties we suffered in 10 years in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Oh yeah, we don’t have a problem with guns in this country – it’s only worse than 2 war zones. So WhaDaYaThink ? What do you think ?

I read the blog and those numbers are probably higher, especially in deliberate gun deaths where people are never found. Maybe that satisfies that confusing category???

All in all … those numbers suck and are very unfortunate. I guess I’m not clear on what type of reform you would like to see or if your argument is a full ban.

But in quoting stats, i could site deaths related to alcohol, domestic violence, etc etc. People do shitty and stupid things. With guns, with cars, with their hands, with lack of common sense or decision making – to the food they eat.

#1 accidental death was vehicular – do we ban people from driving?

#2 Falls (Deaths per year: 14,900) .. Can’t legislate stupidity

And you get I’m playing devils advocate here.

There absolutely should be some tightening of the rules and types of guns citizens are allowed to have – I think that is evident. But those census numbers wouldn’t sway me …. Because I could find another set of just as horrifying numbers.

Fundamentally I believe in the right to bear arms. Most people are very responsible with guns, I would assume that % is higher

I couldn’t have said it better than Michelle. Factual and to the point.
