I just wanted to point out the fact that James Holmes, 24, the joker obtained all of his guns legally which essentially firmed up my contention that though a man or woman can be SANE when purchasing a firearm, that same individual can lose it and become INSANE. Just take a look at the attached photos and one can see the before and after photographs; for God’s sake, the gunman earned a Ph.D in neuroscience.

12 people and 58 injured at the hands of one scrawny , little man, all made tenable by the simple fact that he had a license to own guns. How many more killings, shooting sprees, mass murdering incidents, must we endure before we wake up and put forth legislation that will put an end to this horror. I am not suggesting that I have all the answers, but certainly something must be done – and done NOW !

I have been reading a lot of right wing rhetoric on Facebook and the other social networking sites suggesting that in essence, the solution is to arm to the teeth every man, woman, child of this once great nation; this is ARCHIE BUNKER LOGIC (People think I’m kidding, but I’m serious, there is a certain episode of  ‘All in the Family’  in which Archie proudly declares that arming our citizenry is the logical thing to do to resolve this very complicated and complex gun issue epidemic.)

Though in the Colorado incident, the gunman fired away with shotguns and assault rifles (just like in Columbine), I think the first step is to go after handguns and anything that some madman can conceal. Next or at the same time get rid of ALL assault weapons – this is a no-brainer. This leaves shotguns for deer hunting and ’22 ‘s  for bird hunting (or for protection if one is elderly or perhaps a single woman) which I don’t have a problem with but I think there must be a FEDERAL law passed which mandates that a thourough psychiatric examination must be carried out on an annual basis; much sterner and comprehensive than what the individual states now have on the books.

There is so much to write about and there is a plethora of compelling issues that this utterly grim, grizzly, and gruesome incident forces us to look at such as – should filmmakers be more responsible about the violence that is portrayed. I am totally against censorship but study after study conclusively show that young people, children, very immature adults and crazy people are affected by gratuitous violence. This is another blog.

At this point, I’m going to open it up and ask WhaDaYaThink ? What do you think ? Mayor Bloomberg of New York suggested that the two candidates running for president ought to make the issue of gun control a staple of their campaign strategy. This is a great idea ! What are you going to do about the gun problem we have in this country, Governor Romney, if you get elected as president this November? How about you – President Obama: how are you going to 1. Fix the economy and 2. prevent another horrifying incident like this from happening again ?

Oh, incidentally, this recent shooting occurred just 20 miles from Columbine High School. Scary ain’t it ?

THIS IS TOTAL LEFT WING BSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS____I have been reading a lot of right wing rhetoric on Facebook and the other social networking sites suggesting that in essence, the solution is to arm to the teeth every man, woman, child of this once great nation; this is ARCHIE BUNKER LOGIC (People think I’m kidding, but I’m serious, there is a certain episode of ’All in the Family’ in which Archie proudly declares that arming our citizenry is the logical thing to do to resolve this very complicated and complex gun issue epidemic.) Where the h.e. double hockey stick did you here that. STOP MAKING STUFF UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gun Control won’t solve mental illness. People can kill with knives, poisoning and other ways. Are you going to outlaw steak knives? How about draino (Remember that Bruce Willis Movie) What was that called?
Nuts are killing in Gun Controled countries, Nuts are killing in gun armed countries. If you think guns kill and not people, well, you might be a nut too. A left wing nut that thinks his big government can cure the people.

How many people do you think that scrawny sociopath would have killed with a steak knife, Rick ? The point is – the ease with which a person can kill and destroy another human being when one has a gun. All you need is an index finger. Guns can turn a 90 lb. weakling into a one man killing machine.

Michael, in your defense I do vividly recall the episode of “All In The Family”. Arche’s logic was hysterical. I recall him running in the door screaming for everyone to come listen to the news because he was interviewed on the street. Believe it or not, there is some logic to his ridiculous rantings. Texas has freer gun laws allowing people to carry concealed weapons and their crime rate is less than ours. A few years ago, there was one instance when an armed gunman came into a crowded restaurant and threatened everyone. People hit the floor and one woman had a legally concealed weapon. She along with other law abiding citizens, reached for their hand guns and took the wacko down. The woman expressed her shock and remarked that she doesn’t know what would have happened if she hadn’t been armed.
Truth is: I’m a democrat. Truth is: I am a gun owner. Truth is: the old phase “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” is indeed true. Truth is: I do agree with you that there is absolutlely no point in the average gun owner owning an assault weapon. Truth is: no matter how strict you make the gun laws, even to the point of banning them for legal possession, the nuts and criminals will always manage to find a way to obtain them. After all, if they don’t care about a human life, they obviously don’t care about breaking the law!! In the end, the only ones to own firearms would be the criminals, police and military. Do you suggest that the mlitary and police should turn in their guns upon retirement.

As for a full psychiatric examination in order to obtain a gun permit, not only do I find that extreme, I also believe it would make gun ownership too expensive for the average gun owner. Secondly, it’s the wacko’s of the world that would probably pass with flying colors!

Another thing I wish to point out, is if a gun is to be used for home protection a .22 caliber handgun won’t suffice.

    Hi Chip,

Firstly I want to declare kudos for the law-abiding citizens who took down that scumbag; can you imagine the shock of the gunman being outgunned by the would-be victims. Fabulous story !!! I honestly don’t have a problem with women having a permit to protect themselves, because it’s the guys who are doing all the killing – it’s testosterone. On a more serious note, I know that you, Chip, have a gun[s] and I completely understand – believe me. However, on the other hand we all know there are people OUT THERE who are carrying and it’s just a matter of time b4 we read about them in the paper. My only suggestion is – enforcement: 1. if you have a permit to carry a hangun, fine. If you don’t – DRACONIAN LAWS, JAIL TIME BUSTER & absolutely no probation under any circumstances. Though I think it would be expensive, I think a psychiatric evaluation (annually) is in order, with the gun owner’s personal cirmstances taken into cinsideration, i.e. women who live alone ought to have considerable leeway.

  5. Chip Says:

Yes, it’s sad to think that these situations will continue to occur from time to time. There are people out there that either suffer from mental illness or life has just pushed them too far. The idea that a psychiatric evaluation would prevent gives way too much credit to the psychiatric profession. They may be able to label someone who is exhibiting signs at the time of the examination, but way too often that is not the case, therefore, the examination would be pointless. What I absolutely do agree with, is that enforcement is the issue that should be addressed. Guns should be legally obtained and if someone is found to have one that is not, an extremely harsh penalty should be mandatory.

  6. rick Says:

My point exactly Chip. Mike you can’t control mental illness by gun control

  7. rick Says:

Mike, I listen to alot of conservative talk show hosts. None of them are saying what you say. Hell their all saying what Chip says. Where are you hearing that bs a nazi talk show or an Iranian talk show? Name your sources before spuing vomit all over my screen.
It wasn’t anyone on FOX, Beck or Rush.
All in the family was a comedy with leftist actors trying to portray the right. Funny stuff but they really made him look stupid.

  8. Michael Tabor Says:

Why don’t you listen to NPR ? If u want in-depth coverage without biased commentary, NPR can’t be beat. I don’t like FOX, Beck or Rush (just the rock band – lol) but I’ll tell u someone I listened to for years who was right wing – Bob Grant. Bob was the 1st guy in the history of radio to sort of hang up on people and be confrontational – yes he came b4 Stern. I did not agree with Bob on most things, but he was wildly entertaining and he was very SMART. I learned a lot from his show.

  9. Michael Tabor Says:

‘All in the Family’ is an all time classic sit – com. Yes it was parody and Carol O’connor, Archie Bunker, was a caricature of an extreme right wing, bigoted babbling buffoon, yet sort of endearing. But, Rick. bear in mind, they also parodied the left, lest you forget, ‘Meathead’ was a sterotypical liberal – smart & educated but jobless. All in the Family is definitely one of my favorite shows.
