Your Father’s Son

February 27th, 2012 by Magdalena Tabor
The other day, I saw your father.
It was the way you told the story.
I said, that’s what he would have said
And how he would have said it.
You said, Really?
And we laughed.

The other day, I saw your father.
His face superimposed
On your own.
And your mannerisms
Mimicked his just then.
I smiled at the similarity
And kept it to myself.

The other day, I saw your father.
You went on and on
About some political quandary
As he took the opposition.
You let him have the last word.
Just like him.

The other day, I saw your father.
Your temper got the better of you.
I heard it in your voice.
You’re not perfect.
Neither was he.

The other day, I saw your father.
In your grace and in your wisdom.
In your gratitude and in your genuine concern.
In your forgiveness (time and again)
And in your sensibilities.
In everything a father
Instills in  a son.
I love the man he’s made you.
I love your father’s son.
