Homosexuals Are Not Aliens

June 29th, 2011 by Michael Tabor
I was delighted to hear that legislators in New York did not cave in to ignorant constituents (when it comes to gays) and finally had the guts to put into law same sex marriage. We have at last enacted a law that should have been a “no-brainer” from day one. This piece of legislation has made New York a more tolerant state and hence a better state and I could only hope that the rest of the nation follows suit.
What is it about gays that frighten some people? It is in my opinion one of the great curiosities of mankind. One can bring up the notion that speaking from an evolutionary standpoint homosexuals cannot procreate and therefore ought not to be allowed to marry. Well then, if one follows the same logic, what about heterosexual couples who choose not to have children; are we to annul the marriage?  Of course not; this procreation rhetoric is nonsense, especially if one considers the fact that we live an already over-populated country and indeed crowded world. Many of the same people who are against same sex marriage and a woman’s right to choose whether or not to have an abortion(another blog) are the very same people who will always say “there are poor people because there are limited natural resources.”
This fear of gays is simply a matter of being afraid of difference and is not unlike racism. Sexual orientation is something a person is born with; and the argument that it is a matter of being raised a certain way or perhaps a form of rebellion against society (we have all heard the arguments) is frankly offensive and absurd. What rational person would choose to be gay? We live in a prodigiously homophobic society as a whole and electing to be gay is disadvantageous in every respect. Even if homosexuals had a choice, which they clearly don’t, what difference does it make? Who cares? Isn’t that what freedom is all about? Live and let live and besides I’ll repeat that people are genetically predisposed to sexual orientation and there is no “cure” (terrible word, it is not a disease).
I will bring up one last argument against gays that we all know. The Bible clearly states and in no uncertain terms that homosexuality is sinful. There are a lot of rational and intelligent people who are religious and believe in this. I am friends with religious people and gay people alike and this is an area where you could either say that that part of scripture is wrong or you could easily point out the very important reasons for separation of church and state.
I will simply state my opinion to those gay people who may be reading this – you are not living in sin and you are not going to hell!
So now it is your turn WHADAWETHINK ? I would love to hear what everyone has to say. Allow me to sum up by posing this question: Why should any human being who is hard working, pays taxes, bleeds and cries just like everyone else be denied the benefits that heterosexuals enjoy? Homosexuals are not aliens and in fact, 10% of the population is gay. Leave these people alone, they have been persecuted enough for no good reason. Live and let live.
